Unit 2 Reflection

In this past unit, there has been a lot of different topics and ideas but it has all been focused on analysis. This unit was very long but my understanding of analysis, in general, has grown to great lengths. Moreover, some ideas of mine have changed on certain topics after I heavily researched them and after class discussions. Listening to composers talk and hear different perspectives opened my eyes to multiple ideas and topics.

Though we have done many different works on analysis, the one piece that was the most significant in my understanding of the analysis was the New Yorker cover. When the assignment was released and I first started to write, I wasn’t analyzing the piece but rather just writing a general summary about it. Then when we came to class and I was told to write as if someone wasn’t to look at it but draw it off of my description, I started to have a better understanding of what analysis was. The work that was the most eye-opening for me was the whole single story “mini-unit.” After going through and hearing all these different composers talk about their experiences and their single stories, it made me realize how before I would sometimes jump to conclusions about people. The composers made me understand what it would feel like on their side and now I have a whole different perspective on meeting people or talking to people with different backgrounds. The reason for my lack of understanding of analysis before the start of the unit was simply because I was never correctly taught what analysis truly is. I will state, it does take a lot of work to get comfortable with analyzing pieces. This wasn’t a short unit for a reason, there was a lot to uncover and a lot to work with.

After lots of practice and writing multiple pieces I now have a good understanding of analysis and how to analyze pieces. Thankfully for some composers, ideas of mine that I had before the unit have changed for the better.
