What does it mean to be a man or what does it mean to be “The Best a Man Can Be.” This question has been circulating society and the nation especially after the release of the 2019 Gillette razor commercial. A commercial that was supposed to be about change that needs to happen among men and boys on how they treat others was perceived very differently from the public. The idea behind the commercial was to shed light on toxic masculinity, bullying, and sexual harassment through scenes of violence but many men found this to be attacking. They felt that the ad was purely stating that “all men are bad” and that “all men need to change.” The ad was stating that it is time for men to stop making excuses and to renounce the idea that “boys will be boys.” The ad is not “shaving away masculinity” as Fox suggested. Gillette was trying to say that men can choose to go against peer pressure that tells them to act like “real men” through fighting or harassing people, to instead act like "real men'' by respecting their peers and treating women like any other. The relevance of this increases as toxic masculinity continues to spread. There needs to be change in society by men on how they treat other people. I’ve been around other boys and men my whole life and I’ve witnessed actions that are not acceptable by men. Granted there are a lot of men that are respectful and treat others properly, but this does not negate the change that needs to occur.
