Due to the rapid growth of technology the youth of society is more comfortable using there phone to communicate rather than talking face to face. "According to Pew Research, about a third of American teenagers send more than a hundred texts a day. And many of them, almost most of them, are more likely to text their friends than they are to talk to them face to face" (Headlee, 01:26). This video was released it 2016, I wouldn't be surprised if that statistic was much higher is 2020. The reason that kids now do not have good communication skills is simply due to the innovation of technology. From a little quick research, smartphones didn't become mainstream until about 2012. Before that, including my family, people had "dumb phones" or flip phones. In 2012 I was 9 and I didn't get a smartphone until I was about13. The point that I am making is that I feel that I have good communicating skills because for a little more than 2/3 of my life I didn't have a smartphone or even an iPod. That time of not having a screen aloud for me to have more face to face conversations. After some other quick research parents are most likely to give their kids an iPhone anywhere from 6-9 years of age. This age just keeps getting younger and younger. That is what is leading to the lack of communication skills in the youth of today. Fortunately for Celeste Headlee, she gives us 10 ways to have a better conversation. In short, those 10 ways are don't multitask, don't pontificate, use open ended questions, go with the flow, if you don't know say that you don't know, don't equate your experience with theirs, try not to repeat yourself, stay out of the weeds, listen, and be brief.
I totally agree with what you said about not having a phone until you were about 13 may have helped with your communication skills. I also didnt get a phone until I was around that that age either and I think that may have had something to do with me having better communication skills than my peers. Its also crazy how many people in society dont have good socialization skills, youd think everybody would.
